Pick of the Week – George Koehler Fundraiser

You could call George Koehler a local Sonoma treasure, having played music here in the Valley for years, and in his 77 on this planet, has been a, jazz guitarist, composer, arranger and educator. He’d love to carry on with a few more years but unfortunately he has hit a bump in the road of life. He’s been diagnosed with non-small cell Aden carcinoma lung cancer. He wants continue with this quality of life by using integrative medicine and oncology. He is currently undertaking pinpoint radiation Cyberknife treatments at the UCSF in San Francisco, but the expenses are above and beyond his means, so his friends are gathering to put on what else? A music fundraiser to help Koehler with his expenses. The funds will help off-set the costs of his special diet, breathing, imaging, along with alternative treatments, travel and parking expenses. Of course, none of these things are paid for by Medicare or any insurance.

Rossi’s 1906 Dancehall in El Verano has donated the space for the entire day on Monday, Sept. 7, kicking off early at 2 p.m. and will feature a variety of local acts all day. In no particular order, acts include Plan Be, Ten Foot Tone, Davedjohn Quartet, Voices in my Head, Rubber Soul, Earl Blue “The Boogie-Woogie Kid”, Styx with Butch Engle and Tsunami with Sue Albano. Others are invited to bring an instrument and perform as well. The day will be emceed by yours truly and Jeff Gilbert, with no-host barbecue and beverages available all day. Pick 2 of the Week – Musicworks!Sonoma

Since 2011, MusicWorks!Sonoma has been providing concerts and shows for entertainment and to help some local non-profits as well. Directed by Jim Griewe, the group describes themselves as a musical repertory company comprised of vocalists dedicated to sharing their talents for the sake of supporting philanthropic causes. The repertoire includes classical music from the 1600’s up to contemporary times, varying aspects of the Great American Songbook, show tunes and rock ‘n roll hits.

Over the years, the group has helped the Willmar Center and the Kiwanis Club and this weekend is no different, with the Moose Lodge being the beneficiary. The show is called “Happy Days are Here Again” and will feature the swinging sounds of the ‘30s and ‘40s era’s with songs from George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Glenn Miller, Louis Prima and more The 14-voice performance choir will be accompanied by the John Simon Trio along with special guest, David Shrader on saxophone.

The night kicks off at 6 p.m. at the Moose Lodge with a pre-concert hors d’ouevres reception followed immediately by the performance. Seating will be first-come first-served and for tickets and more info, call 290-9175. Tickets will also be available at the door.
