The Hawaiian dance group called Hula Mai is presenting a “Hawaiian Fun Fest” in the back room at the Plaza Bistro on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. A number of performers will be on hand to participate in a Kanikapila (Hawaiian music and dance jam session) with the group being led by Del Medina. Medina referred to as “The King of the Kanikapila,” has been leading Kanikapila in Marin County for 15 years. “We’ve been trying to lure Medina to Sonoma for a long time” says Betty Ann Bruno of Hula Mai, “because so many people in this community play ukulele and love the hula.” Medina doesn’t just play Hawaiian music, he plays songs people have grown up with, songs they sang around campfires, at beach parties and around the living room piano. “I love Hula Mai,” says Medina. “They have a real Hawaiian heart. I’ve brought my ukulele and my friends to Sonoma for their shows in the Plaza, and I’m looking forward to making this Sonoma Kanikapila a regular thing.” People are invited to bring instruments or just join the dance.
